The 2011 CVMA Veterinarian of the Year is The Center for Animal Wellness' own Dr. Aubrey J. Lavizzo!

Dr. Lavizzo graduated from the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1970 and began his career in Louisiana. But he always dreamed of living in Colorado and soon joined the Denver Pet Hospital, which he bought in 1973. He moved the practice into larger quarters and changed ts name in 1984, and in 2006 designed and built his dream, The Center for Animal Wellness. The practice culture is an extension of his life philosophy of servant-leadership, which values and nurtures relationships and whose fundamental principle is the empowerment of all members of the practice team to lead.

His many accomplishments include his collaborative efforts with The Children's Museum of Denver and the Colorado Alliance for Cruelty Prevention to create the educational interactive exhibit 'Ready, Vet, Go!'; the HOPE program of the Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation; and the partnership between the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and The Center for Animal Wellness to provide care for the pets of the homeless on the annual Colorado Cesar Chavez Day of Service.

Now, in the sunset of his career, he finds his greatest rewards in giving back with his work in leadership development with students and recent grads through the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Experience as a faculty member and facilitator. He has spoken to students across the country, and his practice has hosted externs from CSU, WSU, MissSU, OklaSU, Mizzou, Penn, Minnesota, Tennessee, and next year will host a student from the Royal Veterinary College in London.

One of his nominators easily explains why he is so deserving of the award. "In working to enhance the well-being of the animals in Colorado, I have come to know a remarkable human being. His journey is about hard work, individual effort, striving for a lifetime of excellence and good fortune. He has accomplished a great deal of good for the community by advancing veterinary medicine through his clinic, contributing to education and selfless giving of time and talent."

Congratulations Dr. Aubrey!
